If the truth be known...

I am actually scared -just a little - of flying. Every time I board a plane a little set of butterflies sets in.

I have flown literally millions of miles in my life. Everything from a private plane to supersonic. Commercially from a DH Dragon Rapide to a DC3 to Concorde. That makes me VERY fortunate.

Reading this article about those who survived US 1549 is a great story. How decisions were made, how luck and the right about of training and fortitude all converged to save 155 lives. The survival of Japan Airlines JL 516 also brings to mind how things happen. And also there are notable failures.

FILE - A Japan Airlines plane is on fire on the runway of Haneda airport in Tokyo, on Jan. 2, 2024. The 379 passengers of Japan Airlines Flight JAL-516 didn't expect their plane to burst into flames just as it was about to touchdown at Tokyo’s Haneda airport Tuesday evening. A smaller coast guard Bombardier Dash-8 aircraft, preparing to take off to deliver urgent aid to quake-hit central Japan, was using the same runway when the two collided. The Associated Press collected accounts from witnesses, officials and transcripts of the traffic controls communication. (Kyodo News via AP, File)
